Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has shrugged off criticism following his recent appointment to serve on Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign team.
Gyan, who was named on the Manifesto Committee of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, is set to lead the ‘Youth and Sports’ manifesto sub-committee.
The former striker’s association with the political campaign has sparked mixed reactions among Ghanaians, with some expressing disapproval.
However, the ex-Sunderland player remains unfazed, stating, “They have their own opinions. I have been there [before]. I have been to stadia, been booed in front of 80,000 people, I am used to it.”
Addressing critics at the inauguration of the NPP’s Campaign Team for the 2024 general elections, Gyan emphasised his confidence and experience.
“At the end of the day when everything is said and done, we see what we did or what we couldn’t do. The criticisms will come. It is also good for me personally and for my team to push harder…”
The former Sunderland forward, who retired from professional football in June 2023 after nearly two decades in the sport, highlighted the importance of sharing his 20 years of experience with the new generation.

“I have confidence in myself and I know what I can do to help. I am here to help because of my 20 years of experience. I can’t just sit at home and keep it. I have to share with the new generation to benefit from it.”
He holds the record as Africa’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup with six goals and is the former all-time top scorer of the Black Stars with 51 goals.
The Manifesto Committee, on which Asamoah Gyan serves, is tasked with a comprehensive review of the New Patriotic Party’s previous manifestos from the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Despite the criticism, Gyan remains committed to contributing his expertise to the sports aspect of Dr Bawumia’s manifesto.
