Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed his condolences following the death of former Black Stars player Christian Atsu.
Atsu, who played for several clubs including FC Porto, Everton, and Newcastle United, passed away as a result of the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey.
During a meeting with Atsu’s family, the President spoke of his admiration for the player’s talent, revealing that he was a huge fan of Atsu during his playing days.
The meeting, which took place at the Jubilee House, was to officially inform the President of Atsu’s death.
“There are times when it is not pleasant to be in this chair and today is one of them. The young man we are all mourning is an exceptional athlete, a gift to our nation, and those of us who are football fanatics which I count myself as one spent a lot of time admiring him and his exploits on the field.
“The news that came from Turkey as a result of the tragedy that occurred was a torturous experience for us because, initially, we were made to understand that he was alright and then came to the conclusion that indeed he has been called by the Almighty.
“It’s a tragedy for his family, his community, and our country. I want to express to you, the representative of his family and the football fraternity of Ghana my deepest condolences and sympathies,” he said.

The president further assured the family of the state’s assistance for a befitting burial.
While a date for the final funeral rites is yet to be announced, the family have decided to hold a one-week observation on Saturday, March 4, 2022.
Atsu, who was a member of the Ghana national team, made 65 appearances and scored 10 goals for the Black Stars. He was widely regarded as one of the most talented players to come out of Ghana and was highly respected by his peers.
