Ghanaian amateur boxer Samuel Takyi is thinking about becoming a professional after excelling at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Takyi, 20, was the only Ghanaian athlete who returned from the games with a medal. He won bronze in the men’s featherweight boxing, Ghana’s first Olympic medal in 29 years.
Takyi’s achievement has been widely celebrated, and he wants to achieve more, but not at the amateur level as he has set sights on becoming a pro boxer.
“I’m not going to fight amateur boxing again because I am an Olympic bronze medalist. The Olympics is the highest of all games so I am determined to become a professional.
When I go to professional and bring the world title to Ghana, Ghanaians will celebrate it too. I believe in my God and myself that I will be successful as a professional boxer,” Takyi said on Saturday’s WarmUp Plus on TV3.
Takyi has been rewarded with $30,000 and a car for making the country proud in Japan.
