Former Ghana star Mohammed Polo has weighed in on the debated issue of Asamoah Gyan’s possible return to the Black Stars.
Gyan told the BBC that he has unfinished business and hopes to return for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The former Ghana captain hasn’t played for Black Stars since 2019 and has not been active for 16 months, with his last competitive match coming on May 2021.
Polo believes that the legendary striker stand a chance of making the World Cup squad if he finds a club and proves himself.
He told Akoma FM, “We must be serious about our football; this is Ghana’s fourth trip to the World Cup, and we want to make an impression. Gyan, despite his age, still has the opportunity. Some of his peers his age are still active.”
“[But] is he currently playing? We know what he’s capable of when he’s active, so if he wants to play for the Black Stars again, he should sign up for a local team like Sulley and prove his worth.
Gyan, who turns 37 two days before Ghana’s Group H opener against Portugal on November 24, said in the interview that his age is no barrier to playing in Qatar, citing another African great, Roger Milla, as an example.
“Roger Milla did the same and played well in the World Cup, but the question is, “Are the situations the same?” We want to make an impact going to the world cup so all needed necessities must be explored but like I said we must be serious with our football.”
