Ghanaian 200m sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah has expressed optimism about his performance in the semifinals and finals of the Men’s 200m in the 2023 African Games.
This comes after the 27-year-old finished his 200m heat in first place on Thursday morning morning, clocking a time of 20.91 seconds.
Despite claiming the first position in heat 6, concerns were raised about his finish as he seemed to have dropped energy in the last 10m of the race.
“I just want to go through my rounds and execute my race and try to make things easy for myself. The heat has shown some good signs, so I hope to come back for the semifinals and do even better in the final,” he said.

Meanwhile, Angola’s Marcos Santos finished in second place just behind the Ghanaian, with a time of 20.96, setting a national record for Angola.
Later today, the athletes will return to the track to compete in the men’s 200m semifinal, with the final scheduled to take place on Friday, March 22nd, 2024.

With Amoah aiming for a spot in the finals, his compatriots Ibrahim Fuseini and Solomon Hammond have also secured places in the semifinals, ensuring strong representation for Team Ghana.
The host nation has already secured three medals in Athletics, thanks to the outstanding performances of Rose Yeboah, who successfully defended her gold medal in the Women’s High Jump. Additionally, the male 4x100m relay team secured silver, while the female team clinched bronze.
