Egypt, the most successful team in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history with seven titles, is looking to add an eighth crown to their collection as they prepare for their 26th appearance in the tournament.

The Pharaohs have been the most consistent team in the competition, with a remarkable streak of three consecutive wins from 2006 to 2010. Their dominance began with back-to-back titles in the inaugural years of the tournament, and they have maintained a strong presence ever since.

After a brief slump in the late 1980s, they bounced back with a fourth title in 1998 and then won three straight championships in the 2000s.

However, they have also experienced some disappointments in recent years, including losses in the finals of the 2017 and 2021 editions.

With a mix of experienced players and new talent, Egypt are determined to continue their winning ways and cement their place as the greatest team in AFCON history.

2023 AFCON Matches:

18 January 2024: Egypt v Ghana

22 January 2024: Cape Verde v Egypt

Key Players to Watch

Mohamed Salah:

Undoubtedly entering the tournament as the standout player, Mohamed Salah aims to etch his name further into Egypt’s football history.

With an impressive record of 55 goals in 94 appearances, the Liverpool forward is on the verge of legendary status. A recent milestone of scoring 150 Premier League goals adds to the 31-year-old’s credentials, positioning him to lead Egypt to victory in Ivory Coast. This marks Salah’s fourth AFCON tournament, having previously featured in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

Mohamed Elneny:

As Egypt’s most capped active player with 98 appearances, Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny brings crucial experience to the team. Starting his international career at the youth level, Elneny played a pivotal role in Egypt’s journey to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympic Games. Since making his senior debut in 2011, Elneny has participated in three AFCON tournaments, earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament in the last edition, where Egypt reached the final but lost to Senegal on penalties.

Mostafa Mohamed:

Emerging from the U-20 and U-23 sides, Mostafa Mohamed has become a key attacker for the Pharaohs. Winning the Golden Boot in the U-23 AFCON tournament in 2019, the 26-year-old has seamlessly transitioned to the senior team. Currently boasting six goals in 12 appearances for Nantes, Mohamed aims to complement the efforts of Mohamed Salah and contribute to Egypt’s pursuit of an eighth AFCON trophy.

Coach – Rui Vitória:

Following Carlos Queiroz’s departure after Egypt’s second-place finish in the 2021 AFCON, and a short stint of Ehab Galal, the Egyptian FA appointed Portuguese coach Rui Vitória. With coaching experience at various Portuguese clubs, including a stint at Benfica and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the 53-year-old brings a wealth of expertise. Notable achievements, such as winning the Taca de Portugal with Vitória Guimarães in the 2012/13 season and securing league and cup trophies with Benfica, highlight Vitória’s successful track record. Poised to surpass the accomplishments of his compatriot Queiroz, Rui Vitória is determined to guide the Egyptian national team to new heights in the tournament.
