Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, holds his place at the top of business experts Forbes’ list for another year, after raking in around $400m (£310m) over the past 12 months. A large chunk of the cash comes from Sony’s recent acquisition of his estate’s stake in EMI Music Publishing for an eye-watering $287m (£223m). It sees The King of Pop hold off The King, Elvis Presley, in second with a mere $40m ($31m) to show for this year. The bulk of Elvis’ posthumous fortune comes from selling tickets to his home in Graceland and a new $45m (£35m) entertainment complex called Elvis Presley’s Memphis. Bob Marley sits in fifth having made $23m (£18m) this year and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who became eligible for the list in 2017, is straight in at number seven with an after-death haul of $15m (£12m). Perhaps most interestingly though from a music point of view is the appearance of controversial late rapper XXXTentacion in 11th place. The rapper, who was murdered in Florida in June, made $11m (almost £9m), largely from being one of the most streamed musicians of the year. The 20-year-old has racked up more than four billion streams and was honoured at both the American Music Awards and BET Hip Hop Awards. He was facing domestic abuse charges at the time of his death.
