Empathy and trolls: Social media react to Hajia4real’s ‘Romance Scam’ brouhaha

Hajia4Real, a Ghanaian artist and social media influencer whose actual name is Mona Faiz Montrage, is experiencing a big reaction on social media after being extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States following suspicion of participating in a romance scam.

The revelation has elicited a range of emotions, with social media platforms quickly becoming a battleground for empathy and trolls as the tale unfolds.

Hajia4Real has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States on charges of swindling over $2 million.

The allegations against her stem from a disturbing lonely hearts scam that targeted elderly, single Americans. She appeared in federal court in Manhattan, pleaded not guilty, and was freed after posting a $500,000 bond. She will be obliged to wear an ankle monitor with GPS tracking as part of her release terms.

Hajia4Real had about 3.4 million people following her on Instagram. 3.4 million people, many of whom were Ghanaians and couldn't point to a job or career but stayed engaging and praising her. Hopefully, we won't just focus on her but on our lack of integrity.
