Police can’t provide 24/7 protection for MPs – Security analyst

A security analyst Emmanuel Sowatey has pointed out that the Ghana Police Service does not have the capacity to provide each of the 275 Members of Parliament with police escort.

Mr. Sowatey was commenting on the killing of the former MP for Abuakwa North Constituency, Joseph Boakye Danquah early hours of Tuesday.

Over the years, there have been calls for the police to provide 24 hour protection to Members of Parliament following attacks on some MPs in the past.

“MPs are most valuable national assets and as such their protection is paramount but the police service has limited human resource and until that is solved, I don’t think they can provide all the MPs with police protection,” he observed.

The security analyst further explained, “human beings are important and as a state, we need to do analysis and see who are of the higher risk and protect them”.

Mr. Sowatey however conceded,“police protection cannot guarantee safety of the MP depending on the analysis, but it can reduce the effect because their children, wife and relatives can be the target”.
