Yagbonwura summons NDC, NPP over voter registration skirmishes in Damongo

The King of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Tubtumba Boresa, has charged the security services in Damongo to deal strictly with any individual or group whose actions will disturb the voter registration exercise. The King also directed the two main political parties – NPP and NDC – to caution their supporters against disturbing the peace in Damongo. On Saturday, July 4, National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament Adam Mutawakilu, together with some youth groups, tried to stop a bus carrying people entering Damongo to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise. They alleged the people were strangers bussed by the New Patriotic Party candidate from Kintampo to register in Damongo. This led to a misunderstanding between the NDC MP and the NPP Savannah Regional Chairman, Sulemana Iddrisu. Some of them allegedly pulled guns in the process. Tension was, as a result, heightened in the town. This prompted the Yagbonwura to summon the two factions to his palace. The meeting was held behind closed doors at the Jakpa palace. Addressing the media after the meeting, the Savannah Regional Minister Adam Salifu Braimah condemned the actions of the two factions. He revealed the security services have been directed to deal with any individual or group whose actions will derail the voter registration process. “The electoral rules are clear and we as an infant region will not allow some few individuals and groups to toy with our peace all in the name of voter registration exercise.” He added that the king has also tasked the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council to hold a meeting with the two parties to reach an agreement. He also called on all prospective applicants to go out in their numbers to register, the Regional Minister said.
