He was buried at a public cemetery in Bolgatanga after a well-attended funeral ceremony on Saturday, May 23.
Among members of the NPP who were at the funeral are Leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, First Vice Chairman Freddie Blay, National Organiser John Boadu, Former National Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and a host of the party’s regional chairmen.
Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some past and current government officials were also at the funeral.
Alhaji Mahama was laid in state at his family house, Akalbila House, on Saturday morning.
His mortal remains were later sent to Ramsy Sports Stadium in Bolgatanga for Janaaza prayers led by Upper East Region Chief Imam Yussif Adams.
Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to the outspoken regional chairman, our correspondent said.
The police had a difficult time controlling the crowd, TV3’s Rabiu Tanko Mohammed observed.
Some wielded placards against the party’s National Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, who were conspicuously absent.
Alhaji Mahama lost his life last Thursday after he suffered an acid attack Wednesday night.
