Two EC officials arrested for smuggling BVR kits from Savannah to N/R

Two registration officials of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in the North East Gonja District have been arrested by police in Tamale for allegedly smuggling a registration kit from the Savannah region to Viting in Tamale to register people. The machine was detailed to be at the Tantulani Registration Center in the North East Gonja District. Twelve people had already been registered on the machine by the suspects. The North East Gonja EC Director, Frank Addu, confirmed the news but declined to give any information saying he was yet to brief his superiors. Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mohammed Abdul Salam, has accused the Commission for supporting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the country’s democratic process. Speaking to the media on the arrest of an alleged registration official, who is secretly registering prospective voters in the ongoing voter registration exercise, Mr. Salam alleged the EC is doing the bidding of the NPP. “They told us the machine had a problem and they were going to work on it in Damongo only for it to be seen in someone’s bedroom in Vitting registering people.” Mr Salam quizzed the EC on what a registration machine meant for the Savannah Region was doing in the Tamale South Constituency. He warned the NPP not to try to use their so-called acquired power that they use in freeing criminals to try it on the two suspects arrested.
