Ten arrested for pelting stones at Police in Winneba

Ten persons including a female, were arrested at the Effutu Municipal Assembly in Winneba, for rioting.
The suspects were part of the ‘anti-Aboakyir forest mining’ demonstration held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.
They went rioting on the premises of Assembly after the event had officially ended, TV3’s Peter Adator reported.
Police personnel were deployed to the Assembly, who barricaded one side of the road to the premises.
Soon after the official ending of the peaceful exercise, a group of demonstrators emerged, one of whom was holding a schnapp and insisted on pouring libation, which was rejected by the Police.
While that was about to end, another group emerged and began pelting stones towards the Assembly building and the Police. This resulted in a fierce confrontation.
The Police managed to arrest ten members of the violent group who were later taken to the Winneba Divisional Headquarters for further investigations and prosecution.
One of the arrested persons arrested is the organizers of the demonstration, Dr James Kofi Annan. In a telephone interview, he condemned what happened at the Assembly and urged the youth to always maintain focus to ensure that the battle to save their culture, heritage and tradition is won without pain.
