The Assembly member for Eshiem in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, William Armstrong Arthur, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the sale of illegal meters.

Western Region Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Benjamin Quarcoo told Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show sit-in host Wofa Ato that the assembly member was arrested upon a tip-off.

He indicated that residents of Eshiem, Ntaamakrom, and many others are still using the post-paid meters and as such some persons have managed to infiltrate the system with fake post-paid meters.

The ECG with assistance from the police posed as a potential customer to purchase some of the fake meters from the assembly member.

The assembly member, who was eager to make money, sold the meter to the potential customer and that led to his arrest. He mentioned Philip Eshun, a 60-year-old resident at Kojokrom as his accomplice.

“We heard of his criminal activities after a customer came to give us a tip-off. We later called him and pretended to be interested in his meters. We informed the police and later arrested him. He also mentioned Philip Eshun as his supplier. His accomplice had installed three of the fake meters in his house when we went there to arrest him. Their statements have been taken and the police have since started investigations into the case,” he indicated.

Mr. Benjamin Quarcoo is cautioning fake electricity meter dealers to desist from the act as they will soon be exposed.

“We are calling on Ghanaians to assist us in exposing criminals who have been selling fake meters.

“There are also people who steal our conductors but we shall arrest all of them soon. If anyone has a meter that was not secured from the offices of the ECG, it could be one of the fake meters. We will implore all to walk into our offices and make complaints about such activities,” he indicated.
