Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service who were deployed to the Nkoranza to avert possible violence are expected to be on the grounds for as long as the security is not convinced of an incident-free event. The personnel were dispatched to the area following protest by some youth groups in Nkoranza against the declaration of Techiman as capital of the newly created Bono East region. According to the Regional Police Command, apart from the uniformed personnel, plainclothes personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been deployed there to help with intelligence on the ground. On Wednesday, some youth in Salaga within the newly created Savanna Region burnt down the Salaga South Constituency office of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the decision to name  Damongo as the Regional capital. The security presence in Nkoranza is therefore to ensure that no one takes the law into his or her hands, a day after the regional capital announcement. Some chiefs and people in Nkoranza had earlier kicked against the siting of Techiman as the Regional capital for Bono East through a demonstration. The Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Police Service, Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa said although the announcement was greeted with acrimony, it didn’t degenerate into anything untoward. “That is why we sent them there, and they will be there until we gather intelligence that there would be no disturbance.” He explained that intelligence gathered on the grounds will determine when the security personnel will leave the town.
