It follows a decision reached by the Extraordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja on Tuesday. The meeting discussed the political crisis in Burkina Faso that arose out of the last week’s coup by the presidential guard.
President Mahama will be joined in Ouagadougou by President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, President Thomas Boni Yayi of Benin, President Faure Gnassigbe of Togo, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, and the Chair of ECOWAS President Macky Sall of Senegal.
The ECOWAS leaders at the end of the one-day extraordinary session in Abuja adopted a communiqué that among others, strongly condemned the attack by the Presidential Guards against the transitional team in Burkina Faso.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the principles contained in the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the legal instruments of the African Union.
It therefore reiterated its full support for the continuation of the civilian transition in Burkina Faso, the reinstatement of the transition institutions and H.E Michel Kafando as Transition President and President of the Faso.
