He said his conviction is borne out of what he said was the “injustice and disservice” meted out to him in 2001 by Nana Akufo-Addo who was then the Attorney General.
Mallam Issah, then a member of the People’s National Convention, was co-opted into the NPP government but was handed a four-year jail term for his inability to account for 46,000 dollars cash meant for the Black Stars.
In July 2003, he was granted a Presidential pardon on grounds of ill-health.
But Mallam Issah has vowed Nana Addo can never be Ghana’s president “because he has done a very big disservice and injustice to Mallam Issah; an innocent person, and that alone, my God will never allow him. I believe in the God that I’m serving”.
He told Nana Aba Anamoah Wednesday on ‘Uncovered’; a segment onTV3’s New Day, that he did not understand why Nana Akufo-Addo decided to spearhead his prosecution himself when there were State Attorneys who could have done that.
That, he claimed, was part of a larger scheme by the NPP to use him as a scapegoat in showing to Ghanaians that the party was committed to pursuing its slogan of “zero tolerance for corruption”.
He said Nana Akufo-Addo should be ashamed for what he did, adding“If there was no agenda by them, we have all the State Attorneys who could have prosecuted but he opted to prosecute me and after my prosecution, he ceased prosecution”.
Apart from him and Charles Antwi, he said, “Nobody in the history of Ghana has ever had a fast tracked trial like me. [Within] 70 days, I found myself in Nsawam Prison. So that alone in itself should be clear that something was happening somewhere”.
“He [Nana Akufo-Addo] should forget about this election, maybe somebody will lead the NPP to victory but not Nana Akufo-Addo. Look, he doesn’t like me, [and] I don’t like him!” he revealed.
Asked about his relationship with President J.A. Kufuor, he said the former President has betrayed his trust, hence does not trust him anymore because of what the NPP did to him.
Mallam Issah said he does not trust President Kufuor as he used to, saying, “Initially, I did trust him… but now, I don’t trust him because he has betrayed the trust I had for him”.
According to him, he although he was instrumental in Kufuor’s campaign in the run-up to the 2000 elections, when the party won power and he was appointed a minister, some people kicked against it.
“When ex president Kufuor was appointing me, it was against the will of his party. He vetoed my appointment”.
He said President Kufuor’s all inclusive government agenda turned out to be a mere rhetoric notwithstanding the inclusion of Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom and himself into the NPP government.
