Prez Mahama arrives in New York for 70th UN General Assembly

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in New York for the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to address the Assembly on Wednesday.

His address at this year’s session which is themed: ,”The United Nations at 70- The road ahead for peace, security and human rights,” would be broadcasted live on Ghana Television and Radio Ghana.

Ahead of the main event, President Mahama will this morning participate in the opening of the UN Summit on the Post-2015 Development Agenda this morning expected to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He will also later in the day attend a plenary session of the UN to be addressed by Pope Francis.

On Saturday, President Mahama will join the German Chancellor and the Norwegian Prime Minister to host a major side event on the topic “Securing a Healthy Future: Resilient Health Systems to Fight Epidemics and Ensure Healthy Lives”

It aims at preparing the world to better manage any health crisis that arises.

The event follows a proposal made to the UN Secretary General by the three world leaders for the setting up of a UN-Panel to review the world’s preparedness to manage health disasters like the recent Ebola outbreak in some countries in West Africa.

The ‘Securing a Healthy Future’ will be attended by Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who is also the head of the UN High-Level Panel on the Global Response to Health Crises. The Panel was established in April 2015 in response to the proposal made by the three leaders.

Also attending the high-level event are the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, President Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Bill Gates and officials from the World Health Organisation, Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the GAVI Alliance among others.
