The People’s National Convention (PNC) is asking government to put up home sheds for the aged in all the 16 regions of the country.

This, the opposition party stresses, will “give comfort to elderly people who have no family or relatives to cater for them during their old age”.

“By doing so, we believe, the Good Lord would shower us with his abundant mercy.”

These were contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, December 28 after the party’s officials led by General Secretary Janet Asana Nabla visited Gambaga’s Elderly People’s Home.

It was to celebrate Christmas with the inmates.

“We wish to seize this opportunity to express our worries about the number of women that are still being branded as witches and thrown into witches’ camps,” the statement said.

“This heinous act is mostly found in the Northern part of Ghana.

“Most of these women who are unlucky are usually beaten and in some instances killed by their accusers all in the believe that, they saw these vulnerable old women in their dreams. The reality and the unfairness in this practice is that, majority of the women who are usually regarded as witches are usually poor or have no relatives to support them.”

The statement promised that a future PNC government will give priority to the vulnerable in the society.

It said best practices are that heavy investment is made into caring for the needy.

It noted that this could be the reason why Ghana’s development mentors “keep receiving God’s abundant favours”.
