Mr. Ofosu Ampofo addressing journalists at the scene of the incident[/caption] The National Democratic Congress has withdrawn from the ongoing by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, barely three hours into the polls which has triggered tension at one polling station at Bawaleshie. NDC chairman Samuel ofosu-Ampofo said the party has instructed their agents at all polling stations in the constituency to leave their post in the wake of the tension triggered by the firing of gunshots leading to the injuring of some people.
Heavily armed men in masks said to be national security operatives stormed a house behind the La-Bawaleshie Presbyterian Basic 1 School polling station where they allegedly fired some gunshots injuring six persons.
The house is said to belong to the NDC candidate in the by-election, Delali Kwasi Brempong, but he was not inside at the time of the incident.
The incident created a chaotic situation at the polling station causing voting to be disrupted.
Chairman of the NDC Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who was shocked by the incident, told journalists on the ground that the party has with immediate effect withdrawn from the by-election becasue they cannot endanger the lives of their people.
“As a National Chairman, we cannot endanger the lives of our people because of this by-election, and so we have consulted with the candidate, I have spoken to him, and he is unable to step out because of this incident,” he explained.
Accordingly, he said they have contacted their candidate,Delali Kwasi Brempong, whose house the attack happened, and agreed that “in the interest of life and property, we should hold on with the election, so, officially we have instructed all our agents to leave the polling station.”
