Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has expressed worry over the conduct of security personnel at the ongoing by-elections in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency. His comments come hours after some persons were shot near the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Basic School 1 Polling Station by some masked security officers. Some six persons, who were shot, were rushed to the hospital and are undergoing treatment.
Addressing the press at the party head office in Accra, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo condemned the incident, stating that it smacks of serious lawlessness in the country. According to him, such incidents during elections do not speak well of Ghana’s democracy. “We are sending a clear signal to the Commander[-in-Chief] of the Armed [Forces], the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Officers that the democracy we have all fought for is under siege. “Today is another sad day for democracy and as a party; we cannot and will not be part of this exercise.” He condemned the incident and called for solidarity with the injured persons who fell victims of the unfortunate shooting incident. “Today is a very sad day for democracy and asking all our party officers to fly our flags at half-mast. “This seat is not important than the lives of our party members.” Mr. Ofosu Ampofo called on security agencies to be up and doing to put the country in order in terms of security.
