The Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has indicated that the party will continue engagements with all stakeholders in the Yendi constituency to foster lasting peace.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP confirmed Farouk Aliu Mahama as the parliamentary candidate for the Yendi constituency on Tuesday, April 9.

The Yendi constituency parliamentary elections were marred by violence leading to both candidates in the election declaring themselves as winners of the race. The Electoral Commission (EC) also denied declaring any candidate as the winner of that election.

Mr. Mohammed in an interview on TV3 News 360, underscored that the NPP based its decision on Article 12 of the party’s constitution, which focuses on the selection of parliamentary candidates.

Responding to the level of engagement the party has had with the main contender, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, Haruna Mohammed noted that key members of the party’s leadership were made to engage with both sides.

“These persons were made to engage these parties with respect to the decision of NEC, which was not communicated because we needed these discussions to be done before this communication is done.”

He added, “So as after they have reported back to us, NEC then asked that this resolution be now made public for the public to know that this is the work of the national executive committee.”

The Deputy General Secretary further noted the importance of continued engagements to address any concerns going into the December 7 polls.

“We are not going to end there. Yendi is our cash cow, and we know this decision might not be sitting with all the people in Yendi, so at this material point in time, the party will continue to engage all stakeholders in this particular matter,” he stated.
