Bawumia is most visionary and competent to lead NPP – Delegates say in UK survey

A survey by UK-based policy and research group, the Centre for Sustainable African Development Initiatives, has revealed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most visionary and competent among the 10 people contesting the NPP flagbearership.

Ten individuals have filed their nominations to contest and the party will hold a special delegates elections to reduce the number to 5 for the main showdown in November.

Ahead of the Super Delegates election on Saturday, August 26, the Centre for Sustainable African Development has sampled the views delegates who will vote on Saturday on issues concerning the election.

Among questions asked delegates was who they will vote in order of preference, as well as factors they considered before voting for a candidate.

According to the report, 72.6% of delegates for the special voting said they will vote for Dr. Mahamudu because he is the most competent and visionary among the 10 candidates.

Following Dr. Bawumia at a distant second place is former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, whom the report say will place second with 7.7%..

The report also tipped Kennedy Agyepong to place 3rd with 4.3% while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is expected to get 1.3%. Former Agric Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto will complete the top 5 with 0.6%.

The percentages, representing the likely outcome of the Special Delegates Conference, is the same percentage for factors which would influence a delegate.

In that regard, the delegates said they considered a person’s vision for the party and the country, as well as the person’s competence.

The overwhelming majority of delegates, 72.6%, who said they would vote Dr. Bawumia, also believe Dr. Bawumia should lead the party because he is most competent amongst the 10, and he is also the one with a clear vision for the party and Ghana.

A sample size of 300 NPP special delegates nationwide, from the population size of 961 to special delegates voters, was used for the survey.

The breakdown of the sample size across the regions are as follows:

Upper West 11, Upper East 17, North East 15, Northern 19, Savannah 17, Bono East 19, Bono 14, Ahafo 11, Ashanti 36, Eastern 29, Greater Accra 29 , Central 19, Western 19, Western North 15, Oti 11, Volta 19.

Respondents, who form the NPP electoral college for the special delegates, were constituency chairpersons (143), regional executive members (103), members of Parliament (33), Council of Elders (9), National Council members (8), card-bearing ministers (3), and former national officers (1).
