Police pursue perpetrators of Katanga-Conti clashes

Police have served notice those behind Thursday night’s violent clashes on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will be arrested and made to “face justice”.

Describing the attacks as “unfortunate, needless and unjustifiable”, the police said they have begun their investigations.

The clashes were between resident students of University Hall, popularly known as Katanga, and Unity Hall, popularly known as Continental or Conti.

Students were seen pelting stones at one another while parked vehicles were smashed in acts of vandalism.

Police were immediately deployed to the scene and calm has since been restored.

“The police have restored calm on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology following violent clashes between students of the Katanga and Unity Halls of the University,” a statement on Friday, August 19.

“The Police are in firm control of the situation and investigation is ongoing to arrest those behind this unfortunate, needless and unjustifiable attacks and bring them to face justice.

“We therefore urge all law abiding members of the university community to remain calm and support the police as we deal with the situation.”
