The police officer alleged to have shot and killed a student and injured another in the Western Region Friday night will make his first court appearance on Wednesday, December 27. Corporal Adjei Shaibu of the Inchaban Police Station is reported to have shot at five students at Nyankrom in the Shama District of the Region, killing Lawrence Joe Baidoo, 18, instantly. One other person, Kwabena Dukpor, 22, who sustained “gunshot wounds”, is currently on admission at the St. Benedict Hospital at Inchaban. Kwabena Dukpor had mentioned Corporal Shaibu as the one who shot at them. But the police officer denies this. According to his version, he called the Shama police after hearing the gunshots. When they got there, the ‘assailants’ were nowhere to be found, according to his version. The victims of the gunshots were, therefore, immediately sent to the nearest hospital for treatment. The gun, used according to the police, is a pump gun and D/Cpl Shaibu says he has never signed for any pump gun nor has he ever owned a gun in his life. The Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwesi Duku, has meanwhile directed the regional investigative team to take over investigations into the issue. Meanwhile, the Regional Police Commander says the investigations directorate has taken over the inquest into the crime. Speaking to 3news.com, the Western Regional Police PRO, ASP Olivia Adiku, revealed that the police are yet to find the gun used for the act. The body of the deceased is currently at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital’s morgue awaiting autopsy. Source: 3news.com|Ghana ]]>
