Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu has downplayed demands by some workers for a pay rise in the face of the utility tariff and petroleum price increases.

According to Mr Iddrisu, government is bent on stabilizing the economy and more importantly fixing the energy crisis. Therefore, such a demand is impossible to be met.

A 50 per cent pay rise is what is making rounds as being demanded by some workers.

“We need to stabilize the economy. We need to fix the energy crisis in a sustainable manner. We will need to improve the financial health of the utility agencies…so a wage increase by 50% is not just difficult but impossible,” the Employment Minister stressed.

He, however, said government will engage labour on some cushions as some of the measures are simply irreversible.

“With the energy sector levies we have little or no choices and we have no luxury as government to ensure that we fix the energy crisis for good.”

Organised Labour has also served notice to unleash a series of mass actions against government if its demands are not met by January 13.
