Following the allegations there was huge public debate on whether or not Ghana should audit its current register – a position espoused by the National Democratic Congress or have an entirely new register – a position being championed by the New Patriotic Party.
The Electoral Commission set up a 5 member committee to review proposals submitted to the commission over the same debate.
At the 2 day forum, various political parties and civil society organisations presented their submissions to the 5 member committee which would later present recommendations to the electoral commission on what could be done.
The Electoral Commission – EC also made a presentation where it explained that some of the allegations raised by the New Patriotic Party are founded but gave reasons why such anomalies were recorded giving indications that they would be rectified.
The EC however asked the NPP to submit a copy of the Togolese register they used as basis for their allegations so they (EC) can further investigate the veracity or otherwise of their claim.
The director of elections of the New Patriotic Party, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah in a Facebook post said “The New Patriotic Party has today presented to the Electoral Commission of Ghana, a request made for the Togolese voters register and another in Ghana where stapled pictures were scanned into the Ghanaian voters register. Though strange a request, we hope this would aid and expedite work on our petition.”
Hopefully the electoral commission would in the next few days come out with what the best option would be for Ghana – whether to scrap the current register totally for new one or audit it.
