As part of its centenary celebrations, the University of Fort Hare, Alice in Eastern Cape, South Africa will honour Ghana’s Opposition Leader for his “legal and political leadership roles, both past and present”.
The decision was taken the University’s Governing Council on November 27, 2015.
The citation reads: “Mr. N A D Akufo-Addo’s legal and political leadership roles, both past and present, significantly contribute to human rights, constitutional democracy as well as socio-economic development as enshrined in the University of Fort Hare’s strategic vision and mission. It is in view of this that the University of Fort Hare is honoured to be associated with such a distinguished lawyer and politician.”
Some of the alumni of University of Fort Hare include former South African leader Nelson Mandela and a host of African leaders like Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Seretse Khama of Botswana, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia and Robert Mugabe, the current Zimbabwean president.
Nana Addo left Ghana together with his wife, Rebecca, brother Edward Akufo-Addo, daughter Edwina Akufo-Addo, Executive Assistant Saratu Atta, Political Assistant Francis Asenso Boakye and Press Secretary Eugene Arhin.
“Nana Akufo-Addo will return to Ghana on Monday, May 9, 2016,” a statement issued on Wednesday, May 4 said.
