The National Disaster Management Organisation (Nadmo) has mounted a 24-hour surveillance to confiscate for destruction tilapia processed into salted fish in communities along the Volta Lake in the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region, 3news.com has gathered.

This is to ensure that the fish do not find their way to homes for consumption.

This comes after some fishmongers in the District smuggled poisoned stock from a quarantine zone.

The large quantities of fish – said to be about 18,000 tonnes – were on a Chinese farm owned by Fujian Farms.

The cause of the death has still not been known though officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development are set to conduct laboratory tests.

The Ghana Aquaculture Association has urged the public not to be alarmed about the incident, assuring the situation is under control.

Already, three trucks of the unwholesome fish have been buried.

According to reports, the initial method of destruction at a burial site in Asutuare was not the best, allowing market women easy access to the rotten tilapia for salting for sale.

Director of Nadmo of Lower Manya Krobo Zakaria Adams expressed worry about the reaction of fishmongers during burial.

He said the surveillance will ensure that the unwholesome tilapia do not find their way into the market for sale.

Officials of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) later came to the grounds to ensure that the fish are indeed destroyed.
