Members of Ghana’s parliament have paid their last respect to their fallen colleague, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu at the State House near Parliament House on Friday.

His body was laid-in-state and leading members of the New Patriotic Party, government officials and members of other political parties filed past the body to pay homage.

Traditional heads and family members from his constituency, Abuakwa North were also at the State House to bid him farewell.

After the ceremony at the State House, his body would be transferred to his home town, Akyem Old Tafo for burial.

He left behind a wife and two children.

The late MP was murdered at his Shiashi residence on Tuesday February 9 at dawn. A 19 year old suspect, Daniel Asiedu is in police custody for being the murderer of the MP.

I went to steal not to kill

The suspect in his statement to the police said he went to the house of the late MP to steal and not to kill him. He said he “entered the house around 1:00 am with a catapult, a cutter and a sharp knife…[went] through the iron fence at the blind side of the security man who was fast asleep.”

He was charged with robbery and murder and his charge sheet read “the suspect picked a ladder in the house and climbed to the porch of the top floor and entered the bed room through the window whilst the deceased was sleeping. Suspect began to search the room but deceased woke up and held him.

“He stabbed deceased on the right chest above the breast. Deceased held the knife and shouted for help but no one came. The suspect pulled the knife through the deceased hands creating a deep cut in his palm.

“Deceased who was bleeding profusely fell by his bed helpless and the suspect stabbed him again on the right chest below the breast. Suspect realizing that the deceased was almost dead left him and took away his two i-phones and a tablet.

“Suspect managed to descend from the top to the back of the house and climbed one of the poly tanks in the house and jumped over the electric fence into the adjoining house and escaped,” it added.

Security for MPs

The murder of JB Danquah Adu reignited the debate about the security of Members of Parliament who had on several occassions complained of attacks on their lives by robbers.

The MPs have on several occasions asked for security and the discussion has bothered on who pays these police officers when they are detailed to the MPs.

Meanwhile a new police post has been placed at Parliament House to provide security for the legislators when they are at work.
