Martin Amidu has no presidential ambitions ‘for now’

President Akufo-Addo [R] will be the third president Mr. Amidu [L] will serve under if approved
2000 Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Martin Alamisi Amidu says he is not harbouring any ambitions to be a president “for now”. He said he doesn’t even have the money to run a presidential campaign as evidenced in his inability to “bring people here and feed them”. Mr Amidu made this known on Tuesday at his vetting for the position of Special Prosecutor. He faced Parliament’s Appointments Committee a little over a month after being nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The question about his presidential ambition was posed by Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West Constituency, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who is also Minister for Communications. Mr Amidu answered thus: “Mr Chairman, I was running mate in 2000. If I had presidential ambitions, I am sure you would have seen it.” “I don’t even have money to bring people here and feed them, how would I go and run for President?” He recalls how he was persuaded by some people to run for the presidency as an independent candidate. “But I told them I wouldn’t do what is impossible.” Mr Amidu, who has served as Interior Minister and Attorney General previously, was honest to say that he does not know what the future forebodes for him. “For now I don’t have any [presidential] ambitions.” If approved, Mr Amidu will be serving in a third government in the Fourth Republic. He has previously served under the governments of Jerry John Rawlings and late John Evans Atta Mills, whom he unsuccessfully supported in the 2000 elections.
