Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, the government’s spokesperson on governance and security, has stated that Ghanaians should not compare the frequent power outages (also known as dumsor) under the erstwhile NDC government to the current power challenges currently facing the country.

Speaking on TV3 New Day today [Tuesday, March 12], Boakye-Danquah emphasised that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has succeeded in keeping the lights on from 2017 to date.

“We should not get to a state of wanting to compare the dumsor of old and the power challenges that we are having today,” he said.

“If there is the need for a [load shedding] timetable, that timetable will come but it is important to state that yes, these transformers are going to be replaced, and the Ghanaian people are going to continue to enjoy the lights that we have kept on over these years.”

Boakye-Danquah further noted that the government had to continue to make huge payments due to bad arrangements made by the NDC government administration to ensure that the lights were kept on.

“We need to be able to state it as it is; there is no dumsor,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in a statement yesterday [March 11], hinted at possible frequent power cuts in its operational areas across the country.

The power distribution company noted that over 600 transformers are faulty, while some are at full capacity due to increased demand.

ECG revealed that 630 distribution transformers in communities across its operational zones are currently above capacity due to increased power consumption.

This, it claimed, might result in blown fuses and broken conductors, causing outages, particularly during the peak load time (7pm –11pm) in the affected locations.

“However, we wish to assure our customers that transformer upgrading and new projects are ongoing to relieve these transformers to ensure a more reliable power supply,” the post added.

“Customers within the underlisted communities/localities are therefore advised to report any localised outage or voltage fluctuations to the ECG Call Center on 0302-611611 (also available on WhatsApp) or reach us on our social media handles via ECGghOfficial (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for prompt rectification,” it said.

The ECG called for the support and patience of affected customers as it continues to work to improve Ghana’s power distribution system.
