As at 8:00am Wednesday, members of the pressure group were yet to arrive at the starting point of the demonstration. Leaders of the group were also absent as at 9:00AM, with just a handful of people ready to stage the protest.
TV3 Eastern Regional Correspondent Yvonne Neequaye reports that the Police, numbering about 100, had gathered at the Asokore Community Centre where the protesters are to start their march but none of the members of the group was around.
After waiting for a couple of minutes, about 15 people showed up at the venue carrying placards. Our reporter says the Police has resolved to start the protest with the handful of protesters and journalists. The march, which began few minutes ago will see the people go through some of the central business district and end at the Jackson’s Park to be addressed.
Currently, there are about 50 protesters marching but the Police and the media have outnumbered the protesters.
Another pressure group, Let My Vote Count which has been spearheading protests over the voters’ register, confirmed it was going to participate in today’s demonstration.
“Our decision to join the peaceful DEMONSTRATION in Koforidua is borne out of our undisputed belief that a new voters’ register for the 2016 general elections is necessary for the survival of Ghana’s democracy and peace,” a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20 said.
However, the members and leaders of that group are also yet to show up at the venue for the protest.
The two groups and others have in the past months been protesting against what they claim to be infiltration of foreigners in the country’s voters’ register.They are thus demanding a total overhaul of the register, the main document use for the conduct of elections in Ghana.
