Rashid died in a clash between the NPP and NDC in Tamale.
The five – Yahuza Yakubu, Majeed Alhassan, Habib Mohammed Dagbana, Shaibu Alhassan and Moro Gundaana – were jailed by a Tamale High Court after being found guilty of the crime.
But an appeal and consistent calls for an overturn of the ruling paid dividends on Wednesday, when the Court of Appeal released the five young men.
A statement issued immediately by the Youth Organiser of the NPP, Samuel Awuku, expressed gladness about the release of their members.
“We are extremely excited about the fact that our age long position regarding the innocence of these loyal, committed and industrious members of the Wing when the issue first happened in 2009 has finally come to light,” the statement said.
It, however, accused the police of partiality in handling the case.
“It is interesting to note that throughout the period at no point were members of the NDC who were involved in the clash invited by the police to answer questions on their involvement in the clashes. We are deeply concerned about this apparent one sided approach which appears to have become a dominant feature of the service since the NDC took over power in the year 2009.”
