Nii Noi Nortey was declared winner in the August 2, 2015 constituency primary in the Greater Accra Region which was boycotted by two of the contestants on the election day.
The two – Philip Addison and Nii Adjei Tawiah – went to court asking it to annul the results of the primary.
The declared results saw Nii Nortey polling 393 of the valid votes cast whilst Philip Addison and Nii Adjei Tawiah managing 22 and 19 votes respectively.
The matter was later resettled out of court and the party took a decision to re-run the election.
The decision angered Mr. Nortey, who is also the former NPP constituency chairman of Klottey Korle, who vowed not to contest in the rerun.
Barely a fortnight after that declaration, Nii Nortey has made a u-turn as he confirms his participation in the rerun slated for February 27, 2016.
His lawyer issued a statement on Tuesday which he stated that Nii Nortey has accepted the rerun challenge for the sake of peace and unity in the party.
“We wish to humbly inform all delegates in Klottey Korle and the teaming supporters of the NPP and that in the interest of peace, harmony, party cohesion, unity of purpose to work together as members of the same political party, our client will re-run of the parliamentary primary,” the statement said.
It also observed, “It is our client’s desire that after the said primary, all the contestants will rally behind the victorious candidate to contest the 2016 election. Our client is hereby calling on all delegates to turn up in their numbers to vote massively for him in order to lead the Klottey Korle constituency of the NPP to victory in 2016.”
