Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina and a human rights lawyer, has clarified that he has never in any way endorsed the practice of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.

He has described stories making the rounds that he has endorsed LGBTQ+ activities as “disinformation and propaganda.”

In an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3 New Day on Wednesday, March 13, the legal practitioner maintained that LGBTQ+ is a sin according to the Bible, emphasising that his religious persuasions would not allow him to endorse LGBTQ+ activities.

“It is part of disinformation, misinformation or propaganda to simply say Sosu endorses gay or Sosu is a gay rights activist or Sosu is a gay promoter,” he said, adding, “and I have made my points very clear as a human rights lawyer and activist; I have never, anyway, anywhere endorsed the practice of gay.”

He continued, “I am a Christian and my religious persuasions would not allow me to endorse sin any day, anywhere.”

According to him, he only sought to warn the country ahead of time of the consequences of passing the bill.

People also read:

“The question and the concern at the time were whether criminalising sin was something a way to go by. Sometimes it is so strange that we are not being very honest with ourselves. Now, since the passage of the bill, we have all kinds of…either the finance ministry or the IMF, people are saying all kinds of things, these issues that we are seeing today were the things that I was simply warning about,” the lawyer and politician explained.

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed

Parliament unanimously passed the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2024, commonly known as an anti-LGBTQ+ bill, on Wednesday, February 28.

The bill, if assented to by President Akufo-Addo, prescribes between five and 10 years of custodial sentences for a person found guilty of willfully promoting, sponsoring or advocating for LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, which are prohibited under the act.

Meanwhile, individuals caught engaging in homosexuality face between two months and three years of imprisonment, under Article 4(2) of the act.
