High expectations as Akufo-Addo accounts for stewardship in 3rd SONA

The menace of political vigilantism and the need to disband all vigilante groups will also be expected to be given attention in the president’s speech owing to recent incidents said to have been carried out by party vigilante groups. Talks about the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi against major trading currencies,  and its consequences on the exchange rate has also dominated the public space and some Ghanaians would expect the president to address such concerns. Discussants on the special SONA edition of TV3’s New Day Thursday have been unanimous in their opinions, that the President needs to inspire confidence in the Ghanaian by delivering an address which will touch on all aspects of the economy. They expect that Akufo-Addo gives hope to Ghanaians, host Winston Amoah was told. Tax analyst and Senior Associate at Ali Nakyea & Associates, William Kofi Owusu Demitia, expects the government to be clear and precise in its policies, especially those that have to do with restructuring the financial sector. According to him, the earlier policy, which saw the restructuring of the banking sector, took Ghanaians by surprise and that, according to him, caused panic withdrawals affecting some banks. He also expects Akufo-Addo to address issues of cost of living. On his part, former Senior Governace Adviser at the United Nations, Prof Baffour Agyemang Duah, expects the president to solidify his commitment to fighting corruption. He observed that the setting up of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the appointment of Martin Amidu as the man to head the Office were in the right direction but expects more to be done. Meanwhile, our parliamentary correspondent, Evelyn Tengmaa, reports all is set for the event. She reports the atmosphere outside Parliament House is charged with traditional drumming and dancing in anticipation of the President’s arrival. Inside the House, she said, security men had come to sweep the floor, using a security dog, while the media also set up their equipment in wait of the commencement of Thursday’s sitting.
