Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has voiced support for winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku’s decision to decline a call-up for Ghana’s participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The youngster currently playing on loan from Sporting CP opted to prioritise his long-term future at Leicester City over international duties with the Black Stars at the AFCON 2023.

In an interview with Alexis Laura on YouTube, Asamoah Gyan commended Fatawu for his decision, stating that it has now proven to be beneficial.

“Although we needed him in the national team but for him not come to the AFCON, I think is the best decision he made because he had to focus on his playing career and make sure he gets to the height and Ghanaians had patience for him despite little criticism but I think it has paid off.”

This comes after the player’s achievement in aiding the Foxes in reclaiming their English Premier League status following relegation last season, indicating that the former Dreams FC attacker’s choice has been vindicated.

He netted six goals and provided 13 assists in the Championship for Leicester City.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, where Issahaku is anticipated to receive a call-up.
