The Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) is urging President Nana Akufo-Addo to listen to the Council of State and act on their pleads to reduce the high rate of duties, levies and taxes on imported goods at Ghana’s ports of entry and the large volumes of tax exemptions.

GUTA said businesses are collapsing because of high rate of duties, levies and taxes on imported goods at Ghana’s ports of entry.

Members of the Council of State on Monday held a closed-door meeting with President Akufo-Addo on the high rate of duties, levies and taxes on imported goods at Ghana’s ports.

Some trader unions including GUTA had petitioned the Council to intervene to review taxes and duties on imported items because they are too high.

Following the petition, the Council of State moved into action to hold consultations with various stakeholders to enable it to provide informed advice on the issue.

Speaking in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Tuesday, the President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Kwaku Obeng, said “we urge the President to listen to the Council of State because we are suffering and businesses are collapsing”.

He said “our cost of doing business is high but we are optimistic something better will come out from the meeting with the President”.

Dr. Kwaku Obeng said “GUTA is waiting for the Council of State to get back to us after meeting with the President and we hope something good will come out of it”.
