Community Health Nurses Association of Ghana (COHNAG) is demanding a compensation package for its members in Mepe and other flood affected communities as a result of the Akosombo and Kpong dams spillage.

The association wants the government to prioritize the well-being of community health nurses who were affected by the spillage and capture their names in the planned support package for the flood victims.

In the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy read on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta noted that the government had earmarked GH¢220 million to support the relief phase of the communities affected by the floods from the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

He assured that the government was planning to provide additional resources to restore livelihoods emphasizing that the amount covers areas affected along both the Upper and Lower Volta Basins.

National President of COHNAG, Ms. Esther Bamfo addressing the media after a donation to community health nurses in Mepe strappingly indicated that their members have been affected hence the call for a considerable compensation package for them.

“Community health nurses working in these flooding communities have been equally affected, they lost their belongings and have been emotionally and psychologically traumatized”.

So if the government is putting resources together to enable restore livelihoods for the victims we demand that nurses and other health workers should not be left out, she reiterated.

Ms. Esther Bamfo entreated Ghana Health Service to keep equipping the health workers to help manage the situation as well enabling them to avert possible outbreak of diseases.

She likewise urged COHNAG members and other health professionals not to renege on their duties in these hard times but give off their best to protect people’s lives.
