The convenors of #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests have announced an intention to picket near the seat of government from Friday, December 1 to Sunday, December 31.

“The picket, themed ‘#OccupyJulorbiHouse’ and #JustResign, will call on the President of Ghana, to resign immediately or be impeached by Parliament,” a statement issued by Democracy Hub on Monday, October 9 said.

The group said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s stewardship of Ghana “demonstrates incompetence, a lack of integrity, routine abuse of power, and greed”.

“We are perturbed by high levels of persistent unemployment among the youth and the level of economic mismanagement that has jeopardised the future of young people as well as pushed nearly a million Ghanaians into poverty.”

It also expressed its concerns about “deteriorating press freedom, extra-judicial killings and the persecution of activists calling for democratic reforms”.

Aside calling for the resignation of the President, Democracy Hub says it will demand the urgent prosecution of corrupt officials including family members of the president who are part of this government.

“The protest will also serve to educate Ghanaians on our enduring advocacy for a New Constitution for a New Generation.

“We believe in progressive Constitutional Reforms that will provide a better framework for social equity and economic justice for our people as well as help confront the abuse of power and impunity more squarely.”

The month-long action will take place near the Jubilee House at the publicly accessible side facing Liberation Street, the group said.

Prior to the protests, Democracy Hub says it will establish and publish extensive picketing guidelines to ensure a smooth and peaceful event.

“Informational sessions will be conducted to educate the public about these guidelines.”

On Thursday, September 21, a similar move by the group to embark on a 3-day demonstration led to the arrest of all who showed up at the 37 Lorry Station, the meeting point.

The police had warned against the public joining the protest as it had informed organisers of the protest that their lawyers, Atuguba & Associates, had been served with an application for injunction.

The gathering by the protesters was ostensibly to call the bluff of the police.

All arrested were released on same night.

They, however, returned to demonstrate on Friday and Saturday though not being allowed to go beyond the 37 Military Hospital to picket.
