MP for Sekondi Constituency in the Western Region, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer has asked Ghanaians not to vote for ex-president John Dramani Mahama during election 2024.

In an interview on TV3’s Morning show, NewDay, on the 6th November, 2023, Andrew Egyapa Mercer blamed the country’s 4 years power crisis on the mismanagement of former president John Dramani Mahama during his tenure of office.

According to the lawyer, Ghanaians suffered a 4-year period of power crisis because the country could not afford to purchase fuel to generate electricity.

“We had no basis to sleep in darkness for 4 years, the only reason was because there was no fuel coming through the West African Gas Pipeline to Tema to fuel our plants” he lamented.

“Obviously, the country didn’t have gas to power its plants so it had to buy fuel to power the plants. But there was no fuel coming through the West African Gas Pipeline”.  We had to pay to buy fuel. There was no fuel running through the West African Gas Pipeline because we did not have money to pay for the fuel” he added.

He also bemoaned the solution that was used by the Mahama Administration and described it as a poor way of trying to solve a national crisis.

“The former president’s administration then decided to secure additional power that we are still paying for.  Beyond the GHC1.5billion debt that the NPP government paid in 2017, 35% of that debt was excess capacity, thus power that Ghanaians had not used yet. And that is what has transpired in our economic management debt” he said.

“Yet, these people sometimes come out to complain about economic mismanagement and public debt, which actually should not be allowed.”

To him, the ex-president, John Dramani Mahama failed to deliver as a president, therefore does not have what it takes to govern this country for the second time.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, November 4, Dr Bawumia was elected as the NPP’s flagbearer to lead the NPP into the 2024 elections. Vice President Bawumia will come face-to-face with former President Mahama of the NDC among others.

Also on the show was Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Former Deputy Minister of Communications, who believes Bawumia does not have what it takes to govern this country.

He said “nobody in NPP’s history who has won elections, since the NPP voter base was expanded, and has had less than 90 percent, has won the general elections.”
