The Ghana Education Service (GES) has justified its decision to extend the mid-term holidays for senior high schools across the country by three more days. The GES in a November 7 memo to directors of education announced a postponement of the resumption date for SHS students on mid-terms, from November 12 to 15. It explained that the decision to extend the mid-term holidays followed a request made by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), but did not give reasons based on which that decision was taken. “Students are expected to return over the weekend [November 15, 2019] to ensure that full academic work resumes on Monday, November 18 2019” the GES said in a statement to all regional directors of education in the country,” the GES said. The directive, the GES said, “equally applies to all SHS 1 and 2 students on the Gold Track who were expected to report to school on November 12”. But the directive triggered criticisms against the GES, with some critics suggesting Ghana’s education system is being played with, especially when no reasons were given. GES extends mid-term holidays for SHS students, reasons unknown In a quick response, the GES has issued a statement dated November 10 to explain the extension was granted to give the various schools ample time to put their facilities in shape to receive the students. “The extension will provide an opportunity for the schools to prepare their facilities before students return,” the statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum Ampofo said.
