Ghana’s Alfred Eli K. Dei honored among Most Influential People of African Descent

In recognition of his outstanding leadership and immense contributions towards growth and development of law students in Africa, Alfred Eli Kwasi Dei, the current International President of the Federation of African Law Students has been honored as one of the Global 100 Most Influential People of African Descent.

The year 2022 has been a year of excellence and distinction for a young Federation under the leadership of H.E Alfred Eli Dei, the 2nd President of the Federation of African Law Students.

Following the opening of the 77th United Nations Annual General Assembly in New York City, he was honored as one of the 2022 Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) 100 Under 40, at this year’s Annual MIPAD Recognition Week. Other honorees/awardees of the Law and Justice Edition were Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States of America, Judge Carlos Moore, past President of the National Bar Association (USA), Gbenga Oyebode, Lawyer/ Co-founder, Aluko & Oyebode Law Firm, and Justin Hansford, Law Professor, Howard University.

The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) 100 is a global civil society initiative in support of the implementation for the International Decade for People of African Descent as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 68/237. MIPAD publishes a unique global 100 list that identifies outstanding individuals of African descent worldwide, pairing those based in the Diaspora with their counterparts inside Africa across four categories: Politics & Governance, Business & Entrepreneurship, Media & Culture, and Humanitarian & Religious and various themed editions. This year’s activities included panel sessions, leadership training workshop, recognition ceremony, showing of a film at the UN HQ and much more.

Alfred Eli Kwasi Dei is the current President of the Federation of African Law Students (FALAS), the unifying body of all Law students, law students Associations and young lawyers in Africa. He holds an LLB degree from the UPSA Law School, Ghana. Under his leadership, the Federation has seen several international partnerships and received many international recognitions which include working relationships with the National Bar Association, USA, the African Peer Review Mechanism, the African Union Youth Envoy, the United Nations, the Australian Law Students Association, the Asian Law Students Association, among others. The Federation is currently institutional members of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and currently spearheading the “Arise Africa Agenda”, a project that seeks to unite the voices of Africa and also seeks to enhance the African jurisprudence. The Federation hosted its 2nd Annual Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa this year at the University of Witwatersrand. Hundreds of young lawyers and law students were represented in the conference which was on the theme, “Challenging The Status Quo in Africa: Changing Legal Perspectives for a Sustainable Legal Future”.

He is a Founding Partner of EyisonDeiAmoah & Associates, a student law firm at the UPSA Law School which has offered training to several members of the Union in research, advocacy and public speaking. His firm stands as the best students’ firm winning all competitions since the inception of the Firm system on campus. He is also the Co-founder of the Africa Human Rights Forum, an organisation that pursues the respect and protection of the fundamental Human Rights for all people through research, advocacy and policy engagement in Africa.

Alfred Dei has won multiple awards in leadership and public speaking including the Leadership Icon award by the apex body of Law students in Africa (FALAS) and was recently awarded by the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law in Liberia for his exceptional leadership qualities in Africa. Alfred Eli Kwasi Dei has been featured in several magazines because of his leadership development and mentorship, and was on the cover page for Lawverse Magazine, a continental law magazine in its Anniversary celebration. As part of his public speaking engagements,  he has spoken at several conferences including the 3rd African Union and African Peer Review Mechanism Youth Symposium in Kampala, Uganda, and the Young Commonwealth Lawyers Association Annual conference on the theme, “Forging the way forward”.

He has devoted his time and knowledge to grooming the youth and the next generation of young leaders to excel and to live a purposeful life full of impact. As a leadership coach and Youth Counselor, he is currently mentoring over 100 students across Africa and is unifying the African voices through the law and leadership.
