EC takes voter registration to SHS students

The Electoral Commission, Ghana says it will embark on a two-day exercise to register all eligible senior high school students for the new voter register. This exercise will particularly take place in schools that are not polling stations, therefore are not registration centres. This innovation will start on Friday, July 10 and end Saturday, July 11. “All qualified Senior High School students who are 18 years and above, are encouraged to present themselves at these registration centres within their schools with either a National Identity Card (Ghana Card) or a Ghana Passport,” a statement issued by Acting Director of Public Affairs Sylvia Annoh on Thursday said. “In the absence of any of these two documents, eligible applicants can use two guarantors who have already registered as voters to guarantee for them.” This decision is said to have divided political parties at a meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC). The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is reported to have opposed this move. But Mrs Annoh’s statement urged all political parties to “send their agents to these centres and all stakeholders are encouraged to make this exercise a success”.
