Records from the health directorate indicates that the 62 maternal deaths recorded midyear 2014, has slightly gone down to 52 this year.
The Eastern Region has 51 public health facilities seeing to the health care needs of over two million population.
Records in the past years have pointed to an unacceptable high maternal and neonatal mortality rate, low extended immunization programme coverage, poor data quality and documentation and inadequate resources as some of the critical issues affecting the region in terms of health.
At a midyear health review in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Health Director, Dr. Charity Sarpong, observed that some success has been achieved in some indicators for the first half of the year.
“Maternal deaths have reduced from 62 in 2014 to 52 in 2015, under five malaria case fatality has dropped from 0.6 in 2014 to 0.02 in 2015” she noted.
She mentioned some challenges still affecting the delivery of quality health care.
“We are lagging in health related MDGS especially in mortality and maternal health.
Dr. Charity Sarpong however noted that the directorate was committed towards addressing the challenges to improve healthcare.
Other partners and stakeholders pledged support to reach out to communities in dire need of access to healthcare.
