There was drama at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium when the mangled vehicle belonging to the Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party was towed to the stadium.

Tongues are wagging by the sight of the vehicle as hundreds of delegates gather to elect regional executives of the party for the Northern region on Saturday.

The party’s Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu was involved in a near-fatal accident on Thursday at Larabanga near Damongo in the West Gonja District, while returning from a campaign trip at Sawla and Bole.

He was admitted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and discharged a day after to enable him participate in Saturday’s exercise as he seeks re-election.

Bugri Naabu has been at loggerheads with some high profile party functionaries including the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba, mainly attributed to what they termed his uncompromising and unyielding character.

Many are wondering if the controversial politician ordered to have his badly damaged Prado Land Cruiser V8 at the election grounds to win sympathy votes in the crucial regional  election.

Others are curious why the police will release the vehicle, which is a subject of investigations following the accident on Thursday.

There are some who are of the view that Bugri Naabu’s supporters decided to get the accident vehicle to the event grounds to prove to sceptics that his accident was not staged but he really had a close shave with death.

Other contestants for the chairmanship position are: Mohammed A Bantima Samba, Alhaji Abdallah Hindu,  Alhaji Majeed Sibawey, and Alhaji Amadu Inusah.

A total of 559 delegates drawn from 29 constituencies in the Northern Region are expected to vote in the NPP’s delegates conference in the region.

10 regional executives slots are being contested for by 44 candidates.
