The Kejetia area, particularly the bus terminal and the market, has over the years become the hotbed for mainly thieves and fraudsters. A number of commuters, traders and users of the place are daily swindled, attacked and robed. The criminals intensify their operations during Christmas and Easter seasons.
But the Police in Kumasi as part of the nationwide ‘Father Christmas Operations,’ has stepped up its game to avert any such incident in the area and the entire metropolis during the yuletide.
“The Police is working hard, but we are going to work very, very hard to secure the business district, Kejetia market… As I’m speaking now, we have about 200 plain-clothed policemen in town to ensure that traders, commuters and all other people go about their duties without let or hindrance,” Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye told journalist Wednesday.
He said the Father Christmas operation has achieved great results, saying, “We are achieving remarkable results,” and assured the people of Kumasi that the Police will do better if they volunteer information on the activities of criminals.
The Police in Kumasi has in the last week grabbed major headlines for the great work it is doing which last Saturday resulted in the seizure of large quantities of sophisticated weapons, including military grade artillery smuggled from neighbouring Ivory Coast.
The gunrunner, a 72-year old Burkinabe resident in Kumasi Akwatia Line, Moro Sata, and four other suspected armed robbers believed to have dealt with the gunrunner have been arrested.
On Tuesday, two more AK47 assault riffles believed to be weapons for armed robbers, which were hidden in a bush at Atrede along the Kumasi-Obuasi road, were retrieved. No arrest was made in that operation.
Large quantities of Indian hemp were seized on December 13 in another operation carried out by the Police at Asokwa Divisional Command. In all, 640 parcels and 256 wrappers of the parcels were seized.
Many residents of Kumasi have expressed concerns about their safety, particularly following the seizure of the weapons, which is considered to be the biggest haul in recent time in the country.
But the Regional Police Command led by DCOP Kofi Boakye has asked residents in the region to be calm because the Police was on top of its game in arresting criminals.
