Three more persons have been reported dead in the renewed Bawku conflict at Sabongari in the Upper East Region.

Reports indicate that the killing happened on Thursday evening.

According to the Assemblyman for Sabongari, Sanni Bukari, the unarmed victims were part of a group of young men picked up by armed soldiers in an operation following the renewed fighting which injured several others and led to the death of a 64-year old.

The Assemblyman alleged that the young men were driven to an unknown location, tortured and killed and by the soldiers.

An eyewitness, Ussif Otumba who spoke on TV3’s News Central on Friday, January 19 said “it all happened here last night when the military men entered the area between the hours of seven to nine. They entered with about a team of 15 to 20 men and found four young men seated in front of their house having conversation. One of them escaped sensing the danger with how the military arrived. leaving three people behind. The military arrested the three amid gunshot fires.”

“The military invaded them arrested them and killed them for no reason,” he continued.

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga on Friday morning also confirmed the killing in an interview with Accra-based JoyNews.

“Unfortunately, we even had additional killings last night…they hit the three of them mercilessly. The assemblyman tried to intervene, but they refused to listen and they beat these boys and finally shot the three of them,” the MP said in an interview on the JoyNews’ AM Show.

“I am so scandalised by what the soldiers have done, and the youth are grieving. This is very dastardly,” he noted.

The Ghana Army is yet to publicly make a statement on the matter.

The conflict resurfaced when some unidentified gunmen attacked and killed two persons in the Upper East Regional town on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

The shooting is reported to have occurred around noon when the gunmen opened fire at tricycle operators near the Bawku Community Centre.

Six people were shot in the incident with one losing his life on the spot.
