President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has apologised to the Wa Naa, Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, for the recent brutalities meted out to innocent citizens by some military officers.

The newly passed-out officers subjected some men of the Upper West Region capital, Wa, to beatings with the pretext that the mobile phone of one them had been stolen.

Some reported of fractured thighbones while many others were severely traumatised.

At the start of his two-day tour of the Upper West Region on Tuesday, July 13, which was temporarily delayed by extreme weather conditions, President Akufo-Addo commended the Wa Naa for showing statesmanship in the midst of the angst the issue generated.

“You spoke like a senior traditional ruler that you are,” he said.

“So, I have come to add my voice to that of the soldiers as well as the Minister for Defence to say how sorry I am about the incident and to let you know that we will do everything possible to make sure that such an incident is not repeated.”

He said the biggest enemy of the state now is terrorism and that is where the soldiers should have channeled their energies to.

The action of the soldiers on Thursday, July 1 was widely condemned and they have since been punished by the military high command.

A four-member committee was set up to investigate the incident.

They presented their preliminary findings, which recommended the demotion of three of the officers.

The others have been put in 30-day detention.
